  • There were 238 new cases in Elkhart County yesterday. Indiana and Elkhart County both hit new record highs for new cases. No restrictions will be put into effect before the election but they are a possibility after the election given the continuing increase in numbers. Elkhart County hospitals are being taxed by the many hospitalizations. In the last 30 days, 26 Elkhart County residents have died from COVID-19. There is a PSA from Dr. Lydia Mertz encouraging people to voice their support for schools and healthcare workers and to challenge businesses and others who are resisting the measures proven to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. Please understand that exercising the proper precautions helps to prevent our local health care system from being overwhelmed and protects vulnerable citizens. Wear a mask, wash your hands, stay at home if you are sick, practice social distancing, and do not hesitate to get tested.

  • The Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a conversation with representatives from the Elkhart County Health Department, Elkhart General Hospital and Goshen Health on on November 4 at 1:00 p.m. There will be a discussion about current information and resources and how business and healthcare can work together to educate the community. Registration is required and can be found here.

  • Several important documents were released by the Elkhart County Health Department:
  1. The Center for Disease Control Report on COVID-19 in Elkhart County
  2. A ECHD press release on the report
  3. A Best Prevention Practices for COVID-19 Guide

  • The Center for Healing and Hope is providing free flu shots to those who are uninsured, or whose insurance doesn’t cover flu shots. The clinics will be held three Saturdays: Sept. 19, Oct. 10, and Nov. 14. All times will be from 10 AM to 4 PM. Bilingual staff are available. The CDC recommends flu shots for everyone over 6 months of age—especially this year with Covid-19 around. PLEASE GET YOUR FLU SHOT SOON!

  • On June 29th, the Elkhart County Health Department issued a Face Covering Mandate effective on June 30th, 2020 (y en español). There is an FAQ available to learn more (español) and a sign is available to be posted at places of business (español).  The directive outlines how face coverings can help prevent transmission and how to use them properly. Remember, preventing the spread is not just about being responsible so that businesses and events can stay open but also protecting our more vulnerable residents.

  • Elkhart County hospitals are already beyond their capacity due to the increase in COVID-19 cases. There were 229 new cases reported yesterday, shattering the previous one-day record. Please see the message below from the ECHD:

The increase in the number of new cases we are seeing is very troubling. As you can see from the graph, this growth is very alarming. Our hospitals are already at capacity. Please
stay six feet from people not in your household, wear a mask the covers your mouth and
nose in public, and wash hands frequently. If you are exposed to someone who has tested
positive, or if you have any symptoms, even mild ones, please get tested! You can find a list
of testing sites on the Elkhart County webpage.

  • Dr. Lydia Mertz has released a new PSA about the rising case numbers across Elkhart County. 116 new cases were reported on Thursday.  Please do not hesitate to get tested! The rise cuts across ages and areas in the county so it cannot be contributed to one business, one industry, or schools reopening. While Gov. Holcomb is not issuing new restrictions, the county has been moved to orange status due to the uptick in cases. Level Orange indicates medium to high community spread (an explanation of the color coding system can be found here). The state health commissioner will work with local health and local elected officials to consider additional actions. The state health department will convene local health leaders, healthcare providers, school and elected officials and other key stakeholders to discuss conditions and actions. State agencies will be available to provide further assistance and support upon request. Actions may include:
    • Restrictions on the size of social gatherings
    • Restricting common areas in workplaces
    • Additional local monitoring of social distancing requirements at all events and venues
    • Evaluating the source of positive tests and undertaking targeted testing, quarantine and isolation
    • Placing attendance restrictions on K-12 extracurricular activities and sports events. Participants should only meet if they are able to socially distance and wear face coverings.

The rise cuts across ages and areas in the county so it cannot be contributed to schools reopening. While Gov.
