  • Elkhart County is second in the state of Indiana for per capita infections. Elkhart County rose back into triple digits yesterday with 101 new cases reported. The Elkhart County Health Department has issued a directive for face coverings (y en español). Dr. Lydia Mertz, Elkhart County Health Officer, has issued additional updates as well in English and Español. While not mandatory, the directive outlines how face coverings can help prevent transmission and how to use them properly. Remember, preventing the spread is not just about being responsible so that businesses and events can stay open but also protecting our more vulnerable neighbors. Dr. Mertz continues to emphasize the following safety features:
    • Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. When soap is not available, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
    • Wear cloth face coverings when in a public area. Even in outdoor spaces, if you are close to other people a face covering is still encouraged.
    • Keep social distancing of 6 feet both indoors and outdoors.
    • Stay home if you are sick!
    • Clean frequently touched surfaces often.
