  • Elkhart County has the third highest number of infections in the State of Indiana since mid-March, trailing only behind Marion and Lake counties. 51 new cases were reported on Monday. The Elkhart County Health Department has issued a directive for face coverings (y en español). Dr. Lydia Mertz has issued additional updates as well in English and Español. While not mandatory, the directive outlines how face coverings can help prevent transmission and how to use them properly. Remember, preventing the spread is not just about protecting our more vulnerable neighbors but also about being responsible so that businesses and events can stay open. Dr. Lydia Mertz, Elkhart County Health Officer, recently released a statement emphasizing the following safety features:
    • Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. When soap is not available, use hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.
    • Wear cloth face coverings when in a public area. Even in outdoor spaces, if you are close to other people a face covering is still encouraged.
    • Keep social distancing of 6 feet both indoors and outdoors.
    • Stay home if you are sick!
    • Clean frequently touched surfaces often.
